About Our Governing Body

Rowdown Primary School: Our Governing Body

All schools in England have a Governing Body which is responsible for overseeing many of the strategic decisions of the school. A key role is to act as a ‘critical friend’: to support, to challenge, to ask questions, ultimately to represent the school community. The Governing Body helps ensure that the vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school is clear.

The Governing Body works in close partnership with the head teacher and staff as well as visiting the school and meeting the children as often as possible.

Whilst the head teacher is responsible for the day to day running of the school, the governors are involved with such things as staffing, curriculum and school buildings. Governors ensure that the school functions well and maintains the proper range of academic and social objectives.

As an Academy there is also a Board of Directors who oversee the work of the Trust across both schools (Fairchildes and Rowdown) with particular responsibility for finance. The Board works closely with the Governing Body and the Chair of Governors automatically becomes a Director for the period of their term of office.

The Governing Body consists of:

  • Parent Governors
  • The Head Teacher
  • 2 Staff Governors
  • 4 Appointed Governors

The standard term of office for a governor is generally four years. The chair and vice-chair are elected annually at the first meeting of the academic year.

In addition, the governing body has agreed that Associate Members may also be appointed. Associate members are not governors and are not able to vote, but they are invited usually because they have specific skills.

The main responsibilities of the Governing Body relate to:

  • Setting targets and promoting high standards of educational achievement
  • Setting the strategic framework within which the school operates
  • Ensuring that the curriculum for the school is balanced and broadly based
  • Monitoring the use and impact of the Pupil Premium Grant and Sports funding
  • Monitoring Safeguarding procedures within the school
  • Ensuring that all statutory duties are met

Governors also have responsibilities for specific issues within the school such as literacy, maths, inclusion and safeguarding.

Governors adopt, review and monitor a range of policies and procedures that govern the operation of the school.

Our Vision Statement, which has recently been updated, stresses the fact that we are all part of a learning community where staff, pupils, parents and governors work together to ensure that all our pupils have the opportunity to develop to their full potential.

The Governing Body is, therefore, rightly proud of the achievements of the school, not only in terms of academic results, but also for the opportunities it affords all our children in terms of curriculum provision and enrichment opportunities in the arts and other creative subjects.

All governors to a school’s Governing Body must be elected or appointed.
