Summer in Year 2

Well done to all the children. They worked really hard last term and are now getting ready to complete their SATs tests later next month.

We have PE on a Tuesday.  Please ensure that your child always has the correct PE kit in school.

Homework- weekly spellings. Please check posters outside Year 2 classes for results of our weekly competition. Each time your child achieves full marks, their name will be put into a half termly draw for a special prize.

In addition you  can help your child at home by:

  1. Reading every evening.  We have a great selection of books for your child to borrow in our class library.
  2. Learning times tables.  Children who cannot recall their times tables at speed struggle during maths lessons. Please make sure that your child practises at home.
  3. RM Easimaths. All children have been given a login card to access this program at home. It is a great program which reinforces lots of the areas we cover in school in a fun interactive way.

The following websites are also great for practising  skills:

  •  ICT maths games
  • .Top Marks
  • Phonics Play

This term our topics are:

  1. Literacy – We have just begun a story called Leon and the Place Between where we will be transported into a world of magic. We will then be working on some non fiction writing based on our history topic (see below)
  2. Numeracy- We will be continuing to develop calculation methods for all 4 operations as well as improving our mental maths skills. Times tables will be tested using Kung Fu belts and we will continue with our Number Stars tests
  3. Science- This half term we will be focusing on plants. We will be learning about the life cycle of a plant and growing our own sunflowers.
  4. Humanities- In history we will be learning about the famous nurse Florence Nightingale.

Children love to be knowledgeable in front of their friends. Reading around a subject will help them. Please select books from the local library or appropriate websites to help them gain some additional knowledge on our topics.

Please make sure that your child is at their entrance to the school by 8.40am.
