MONKS ORCHARD SCHOOL UNIFORM Statement

The Governors and Staff of Monks Orchard Primary believe that it is important for our school that the appearance of our children is of a high standard. A school uniform looks smart, contributes to a sense of belonging and community, makes children feel equal to their peers in terms of appearance, and fosters a feeling of pride.

The Department for Education says “The Department strongly encourages schools to have a uniform as it can play a valuable role in promoting the ethos of a school, providing a sense of belonging and identity, setting an appropriate tone for education.”

We therefore ask you to support the school by making sure you adhere to our School Uniform Statement.

Our school uniform is:

  • Navy blue sweatshirt or cardigan, with school logo
  • Light blue polo shirt, with school logo
  • Grey trousers or knee-length shorts (not sports shorts)
  • Navy blue skirt
  • Navy blue pinafore dress
  • Navy blue gingham summer dress
  • Navy blue, black, grey or white plain socks
  • Navy blue, black or grey tights, woollen style only
  • Sensible, supportive black shoes (not trainers)

PE kit:

  • Navy blue sweatshirt or cardigan, with school logo
  • Light blue polo shirt, with school logo
  • Plain, navy blue jogging bottoms or sports shorts
  • Trainers (dark and as plain as possible, no fluorescent colours)

NB. Leggings and cycling shorts are not part of the school uniform and should not be worn, except as undergarments.

No visible branding is permitted. The only exception is the school logo. School uniform bought online through our supplier, Mapac, will contain the school logo. Our supplier’s details can be found via the link on this page. We do not insist that you buy your school uniform from Mapac. As long as it is in the correct school colours, you can buy your school uniform from wherever you want, with local supermarkets selling uniform items at competitive prices. Some guidance regarding how to order uniform and sizing is below.

We sell school badges at the office, for £1.25, which can be ironed or sewn onto clothes that do not already have the logo. We also sell second hand school uniform, in the office, for 50p per item

Jewellery is not part of the school uniform and we strongly discourage the wearing of jewellery, including earrings, ear-studs and any kind of nail accessory.

Children may wear a simple wristwatch, but not a smartwatch (eg. Apple Watch), Fitbit or other similar devices.

Hairstyles should be appropriate for primary school. Longer hair should be styled so that it is out of the face, and does not cause distraction or difficulties, particularly in PE and other practical subjects. Discrete headbands and hair accessories, reflecting the school colours, are acceptable.

The school accepts no responsibility for loss or damage to any items brought to school.

Please ensure that all items of clothing and PE kit are labelled with your child's name.

The Halo Code

Our school champions the right of staff and students to embrace all Afro-hairstyles. We acknowledge that Afro-textured hair is an important part of our Black staff and students’ racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious identities, and requires specific styling for hair health and maintenance.

We welcome Afro-textured hair worn in all styles including, but not limited to, afros, locs, twists, braids, cornrows, fades, hair straightened through the application of heat or chemicals, weaves, wigs, headscarves, and wraps.

At this school, we recognise and celebrate our staff and students’ identities. We are a community built on an ethos of equality and respect where hair texture and style have no bearing on anyone’s ability to succeed.
