REMOTE LEARNING DURING SCHOOL CLOSURE
Dear Parents, Carers and friends of Monks Orchard,
Remote Learning during School Closure
Thank you for everything you have done to support your child in the transition to remote learning in these extraordinary times. The Government Department for Education (DfE) expects all schools to have a contingency plan in place for the start of the new year, you may have heard and seen this in the media yesterday (30/01/20). Schools within Croydon have been asked to keep the majority of their students at home and use remote learning. The DfE’s expectation is that remote learning is a well-planned and sequenced curriculum that enables pupils to build their knowledge and skills and make progress academically. To do this we will be using Google Classroom for Reception to Year 6 (Nursery will be using class dojo).
Using Google Classroom allows you and your child to have access to class work at any time and is accessible online through any digital device with internet access, including mobile phones, laptops, computers and tablets. Through Google Classroom, parents and teachers can monitor the amount of work that pupils have done and ask questions about learning.
We have been using Google classroom since September so all parents will have received their log on information already. If you have misplaced this, please contact teachers via class dojo, if you do not have class dojo yet, download the app so you can contact the teacher (the school office is currently closed and will not be able to assist with messages).
Teachers will be setting work on Google classroom to be completed each day. We will be using a mix model of delivery:
- pre-recorded videos from Teachers if explanation is needed,
- videos from other websites to support the learning,
- work set requiring students to type answers and
- daily writing tasks
This will allow parents to support their children throughout the day rather than being required to log on at a particular time to complete work. We recognise we have a wide variety of parents, with a wide spectrum of occupations. Parents work a lot of different hours (not just school hours) and with some families having more than one child needing to complete remote learning during this time, this is the best way we feel we can support all the parents and students at our school.
Teachers will be giving feedback on the work completed. Staff will also be available for specific questions via the class dojo system or the chat feature on Google classroom. If children are not engaging in learning or not logging on to complete work, school staff will be in contact with families to see if any further help or assistance is required.
We are mindful that most families at Monks Orchard have access to remote learning via a Smartphone. We will do our best to make sure that our remote learning can be accessed this way. Any difficulties please contact your class teacher.
We are fully aware that these are exceptional times. We would like to guide families, providing structure to help. Each family is unique and because of this, should approach home learning in a way which suits their individual needs.
Thank you for your patience and understanding in these unprecedented times.
Mr Guy Fairbairn
