We provide an exciting broad and balanced curriculum at Fairchildes with full coverage of all primary school subjects, as well as many opportunities for enrichment and challenge.
Basic skills are taught every day in Literacy and Numeracy lessons in addition to discreet accuracy lessons, which are taught three times a week in Key Stage 1 and 2; focussing on grammar, spelling and punctuation. Reading and the love of books is given high priority. At Key Stage 1, phonics is taught in discreet lessons four times a week, with children across both years working in appropriate phase groups. Phonics is also taught in Key stage 2 where needed and in whole class and group sessions in the Early Years.
Science and technology are also an important part of our curriculum. We currently hold the Science Mark at gold standard! We have great links with local high schools, which allows our children the opportunity to work in science labs. There are science clubs and IT activities for everyone to take part in. We also have a forest school and an edible playground!
We promote the creative arts at Fairchildes with subject specialists teaching Art, D.T. and Music (specifically ukulele, keyboards, guitar, drumming and steel band) Many subjects are taught through cross curricula links using art, music and drama wherever possible. There are regular opportunities for performance including weekly class assemblies, shows, choir concerts and steel band gigs!
We are equally proud of our sporting achievements and believe that all children can achieve in this area. Specialist sports coaches teach gymnastics, archery, skateboarding, football and cricket. Those children with a particular flair for sports take part in many of our school teams including; basketball, football, netball, athletics and gymnastics.
Many children have a real love of geography and history and we make sure that our pupils are given full coverage of these subjects by teaching them both as discreet lessons but also in a cross curricula manner through literacy. We have built up a great selection of books and artefacts to support their learning in these subjects and there are regular trips to further enthuse the children.
RE and PHSE lessons also ensure that our pupils have a knowledge of the cultures of the world and learn the importance of respecting themselves and others. Weekly sessions encourage Fairchildes pupils to grow into good citizens who demonstrate British values.
Each year group attend trips that link with their particular curricula topics and we often have visits from experts such as artists, scientists, musicians and dancers. We also provide a wide range of after school clubs as well as additional visits and enrichment opportunities for those with a keen interest in a particular subject and for our able gifted and talented children.
